COURSES

The following courses are recommended for all students interested in the Health Professions, including: Dentistry, Optometry, Medicine (including Allopathic, MD; Osteopathic, DO; Podiatric, DPM), Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, and/or Veterinary Science. Depending on your major, many of these will be a normal part of your program.

INTRODUCTION TO BIOLOGY I-II
An introduction to the study of biology designed for students planning to major in the biological sciences. Major topics considered include the origin of life, cellular respiration and photosynthesis, genetics, development, anatomy and physiology, ecology, behavior, and evolution.

GENERAL CHEMISTRY I
A quantitative introduction to the concepts and models of chemistry. Topics include stoichiometry, atomic and molecular structure, nomenclature, bonding, thermochemistry, gases, solutions, and chemical reactions. The laboratory introduces the student to methods of separation, purification, and identification of compounds according to their physical properties. This course is designed for students who plan to major in one of the sciences.

GENERAL CHEMISTRY II
A continuation of General Chemistry I, with emphasis placed on the foundations of analytical, inorganic, and physical chemistry. Topics include kinetics, general and ionic equilibria, acid-base theory, electrochemistry, thermodynamics, nuclear chemistry, coordination chemistry, and descriptive inorganic chemistry of selected elements. The laboratory treats aspects of quantitative and qualitative inorganic analysis.

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
A systematic study of the compounds of carbon, including both aliphatic and aromatic series. The laboratory work introduces the student to simple fundamental methods of organic synthesis, isolation, and analysis.

FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSICS I-II
A mathematically rigorous introduction to physics designed for majors in physics, astronomy, chemistry and mathematics. Topics include mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, waves, optics, and modern physics.

APPLIED ELEMENTARY CALCULUS
An intuitive approach to the calculus concepts with applications to business, biology, and social-science problems. (Recommended for Biology and majors other than Chemistry and Physics)

CALCULUS WITH ANALYTIC GEOMETRY I - II
Differentiation and integration of algebraic and trigonometric functions, conic sections and their applications, graphing plane curves, applications to related rate and external problems, areas of plane regions, volumes of solids of revolution, and other applications; differentiation and integration of transcendental functions, parametric equations, polar coordinates, infinite sequences and series, and series expansions of functions. (For Chemistry and Physics majors)
