WELCOME TO THE PRE-MEDICINE AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS PROGRAM

Advising is the Difference

The key to our program is personalized advising. Sometimes good students fail to gain admission to a professional school because they aren't properly prepared with the right courses, the right study habits, and the right test scores. Here's how we help:

Special Advisors
Every entering freshman thinking about a career in a health profession receives a personal four-year plan designed to maximize his or her chances for acceptance to America's top professional schools and graduate programs. In addition to an academic advisor in your major, the five-member Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) helps you prepare for professional school.

Professional Preview
Are you sure you want to be a doctor, a dentist or a vet? We advise you get a realistic view of the profession your freshman year. One way is through Lycoming's "SHARE" (Students Having A Real Experience) program, which gives you a chance to shadow a physician or other health professional. Sophomores and juniors obtain experience at the Susquehanna Health System and with the numerous professionals in the community. Many students complete medically-relevant summer research opportunities.

The Major
Although it is not mandatory to major in the sciences, 40% of students in medical school have a biology major and 20% a chemistry major. Regardless of your major, your advisors will make sure you have the coursework you need to meet professional school requirements.

Application
With HPAC help, you compile an application file by the end of you junior year. This file includes eight letters of recommendation, a personal essay and a resume of all your campus activities, research and volunteer experiences, as well as awards and academic achievement.

Exams
We know the importance of the graduate exams (e.g., the MCAT, DAT, OAT, VAT or GRE). We help you start your review with booklets by Kaplan, Beltz or Flowers available to you at no charge.

Interviews
Finally, HPAC members, as well as the Career Development Center, help you prepare for the application interview with helpful tips and practice sessions.
