Eight Lycoming College groups participated in the 4th Annual Snowden Library Read-In on Saturday, March 15, reading aloud from “When the Emperor was Divine” by Julie Otsuka.
The participating groups included Phi Kappa Phi, the residence life staff, class of 2008 officers, Sociology/Anthropology Club, Black Student Union, Japanese Culture Club, Sigma Tau Delta and the English Society. Participants read throughout the day and raised $115 for the Lycoming County United Way.
“When the Emperor was Divine” takes place in California during the spring of 1942 and uncovers a time in American history rarely explored in American fiction.
The book was chosen in conjunction with the 2008 Spring Symposium on immigration. Dr. Betty McCall, assistant professor of sociology/anthropology at Lycoming, suggested the book and the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs provided refreshments for the readers.
