Artist Chad Andrews, of Montoursville, Pa., will present works from his exhibit “Transitions – Shifts in the Studio,” in the Lycoming College Art Gallery in Snowden Library, Thursday, Jan. 17 through Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008. The opening reception and gallery talk will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. on Jan. 17, 2008.
Three different groups of work will be on display at the College. All of the work displayed represents Andrew’s views of contemporary and traditional image making. The first group consists of print/drawings which merge printed square crosses with images on tracing paper from Andrew’s daily life. These works are 8” x 16” presented in a personal diary/sketchbook format. The cross images are presented in a traditional manner, while the drawings on tracing paper use masking tape and blue glue that is non-traditional. These materials will eventually fade, wear out, and fall off the page, leaving only the cross print. This represents a contradictory scenario that mirrors the artist’s views of contemporary and traditional art.
The second group of work consists of cross “paintings” using non-traditional materials like tar and graphite which are applied to silk-screens and plaster knives. These resources and procedures showcase Andrew’s personal views of the people and places represented in the paintings.
The final collection consists of silicone drawings which evolved from the paintings done with tar. These are pinned directly to the wall, making these works impossible to save after they have been put up. Andrews explains that this creates a “site reaction” presentation in which objects on the wall such as light switches or outlets must be incorporated into the overall composition of the work. These paintings focus on his ideas of contemporary art.
Andrews earned a BFA in studio art from Kutztown University and a MFA in printmaking from the University of Pennsylvania. He has been an instructor and lecturer at several schools, with his most recent position being the director of visual arts at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen, Mich. Andrews has presented exhibitions all around the country, his most recent including “Between the Stones” in Gettysburg, Pa., and “Emu Faculty Collects” at Eastern Michigan University.
