Lycoming College Theatre Department to present “Angels in America”

9-16-08

AngelsinAmerica The Lycoming College Theatre Department presents “Angels in America,” an award-winning play about two unlikely couples in the emergence of the 1980s AIDS crisis. The performance runs Oct. 2-4, 9 and 11 in the College’s Mary L. Welch Theatre. The play, written by Tony Kushner, is directed by N.J. Stanley, assistant professor of theatre at the College.

“Angels in America” is playwright Kushner’s first major work. The play won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Play. It is considered an epic drama with two parts: “Millennium Approaches” followed by “Perestroika.”

Set in 1985, “Angels in America” examines the struggle to comprehend the meaning of love and commitment. The play centers around two couples, that of Louis Ironson and his lover Prior Walter, and Mormon lawyer Joe Pitt and his wife Harper. Their lives become intertwined after Louis learns that Prior has contracted AIDS. Louis panics at the revelation and realizes he can’t care for Prior. He later meets and becomes involved with Joe. Joe has fallen out of love with Harper, who is addicted to painkillers.

Stanley earned a M.F.A. in directing from Florida State University and a Ph.D. from Indiana University-Bloomington. She has directed more than 35 plays at colleges and universities across the United States.

Due to adult situations and strong language, "Angels in America" is for mature audiences only.
