WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Lycoming College officials announced a $42 million fund-raising campaign at a campus dinner for 140 guests on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006. The five financial goals of the “Campaign for a Brighter Future” include:
- $13.5M for Student Support
- $4.5M for Academic Programs
- $3.5M for Faculty Development
- $14.5M for Annual Student and Academic Support
- $6M for Student and Academic Plant Projects
“Lycoming receives no state grant to cover our expenses and no state allocation to support building projects,” Lycoming President Dr. James E. Douthat told the gathering. “Lycoming is on its own…and we are grateful that you stand with us.”
“Lycoming can point out that it is a moderately-priced private college, nationally-ranked by Barron’s as a ‘Best Buy,’” continued Douthat. “But that will not change the fact that few students can afford to attend without the help from someone who never knew them, including those generations of Lycoming alums and other supporters who have left a part of their legacy with us.”
Campaign chairman Daniel G. Fultz, who graduated from the College in 1957, said, “I know that the College and generations of students will benefit immensely from the results of our efforts. In recent years, President Douthat, the faculty and administration have done a wonderful job positioning the institution as a national liberal arts college. Now we must join together to provide the financial assets not only to maintain that status but provide the resources to move the institution forward.”
During the “silent phase” of the campaign, $28 million of the total financial goal has already been achieved, according to Lynn E. Jackson, vice president for college advancement.
“We are very grateful for the contributions we’ve received to date,” said Jackson. “And I am confident that we have the support and commitment to reach the balance of our campaign goal.”
The evening’s entertainment featured Lycoming College students Christen Miner, Glenn Smith and McGair Valois performing songs from various Broadway musicals, as well as a poetry reading by Dr. Sascha Feinstein, professor of English.
A reception prior to the dinner featured music by the Lycoming College Jazz Ensemble and student bagpiper Aaron Lay.
