Dr. Sandra Kingery, associate professor of Spanish at Lycoming College, has been accepted into a three-week residency program at the Banff International Literary Translation Centre (BILTC) in Banff, Alberta, Canada. During the program, scheduled for June 9-28, Kingery will translate a book of short stories by Esther Tusquets, titled “Seven Gazes upon a Single Landscape.” Tusquets is considered one of the most important writers in Spain from the post-Franco years.
According to Kingery, the book’s seven non-chronological stories each focus on a young girl, always named Sara, ranging from nine to 18 years of age. These coming-of-age stories showcase Sara’s first tentative steps into adult sexuality (both gay and straight) and perhaps more importantly, her fledgling understanding of the realities of social class, discrimination and marginalization in early post-Civil War Spain. Surrounded by the trappings of wealth and social privilege provided by her conservative, upper middle-class family, Sara always ends up identifying with and championing society’s underdogs.
At the BILTC, established in 2003, translators are given the time and space for uninterrupted work on current publication projects, often with the writers whose work they are translating. The program is open to literary translators from Canada, Mexico and the United States translating from any language, and to international translators working on literature from the Americas (both the North and South American continents). Since 2003, the centre has hosted translators from 15 countries translating work into 22 languages.
Kingery’s publications focus particularly on Ana Maria Moix’s novels and short stories, but also include studies of Tusquets and Rosa Chacel. Her translation of Moix's first novel, “Julia,” was published with the University of Nebraska Press and her translation of Moix’s most recent book of short stores, “Of My Real Life I Know Nothing,” was just published by Latin American Literary Review Press. Some of her research and teaching interests include literature from post-Civil War Spain, women's literature and translation. Kingery is also translating Tusquets’ most recent memoir, “We Won the War,” which has been on the best-seller lists in Spain.
Kingery earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy and political science at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisc. After studying at the University of Barcelona for a year, she completed a master's degree and doctorate in Spanish literature at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Kingery has lived in various regions of Spain and traveled extensively in Latin America.
