Lycoming College art students to aid local environmental agencies

Lycoming College Art Department students are taking part in the department’s annual Art Practicum Seminar this spring. As part of the seminar, students are required to complete professional work through an internship in the art field and participate in a public art project as a group.

Senior Kim Franco from Tyrone, Pa., Under the direction of Lynn Estomin, an associate professor of art at Lycoming, the participating students include: seniors Kim Franco (Tyrone, Pa.), Amanda Kline (Strasstown, Pa.), David Mayberry (Pottstown, Pa.), Damon McCloskey (Hughesville, Pa.), Amanda Schwanger (Reading, Pa.), Jay Stewart (Middletown, Pa.), Kelly Wedge (Altoona, Pa.) and Shena Hoffman (Richfield, Pa.), and junior Rebekah Shipe (Northumberland, Pa.).

This semester’s group project includes creating artwork for the Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy to exhibit during the “First Friday” festivities in March. The artwork will then be auctioned as a fundraiser for the Pine Creek Oral History and Education Project, which is an effort to document the personal stories, observations and memories of residents and visitors to the Pine Creek Watershed. The project is being coordinated under the umbrella of the Pine Creek Watershed Council and Endless Mountains RC&D with involvement of the Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy.  More information about the oral history project and the Pine Creek Watershed Council can be found at www.pinecreekwatershedrcp.org/. Students in Estomin’s class will also be creating a Flash animation opening for the website.

In recent years, spring practicum students have done numerous projects for the local community. Past practicum group projects include the “Tolerance” project billboards and Web site www.lycoming.edu/tolerance; large-scale banners and a Web site www.lycoming.edu/underground for “Freedom Bound,” which explored the history of the Underground Railroad in Lycoming County; a display against domestic violence titled “An Empty Place at the Table,” which was on display at the Thomas T. Taber Museum in Williamsport; and “Youth Digital Stories,” a video project involving youth from The Center and Williamsport’s Community Alliance for Progressive Positive Action.
