WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Dr. Vincent J. Matteo, president and chief executive officer of the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce, spoke at Lycoming College to Dr. Mehrdad Madresehee’s “Government and the Economy” economics class on April 7.

Matteo talked about the concept of economic development and showed how this sub-discipline can help local stakeholders, such as his organization, accomplish their goals such as: business retention, business expansion and recruiting new businesses. He also explained how the chamber uses some of the economic development techniques in its work to bring high-paying jobs to the area.

“This topic was chosen due to the nature of this course that looks at the role of different layers of government in American economy,” Madresehee said. “Our students had their eyes opened in a number of ways and the feedback that I am getting from them has been all positive.”

Matteo joined the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce as its president and CEO in 2001. Prior to joining the Lycoming chamber, he served as the senior vice president and chief operating officer of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry.

The Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce provides numerous services to the businesses and residents of Lycoming County, including community economic development programs and networking and seminar opportunities for its members. The chamber represents more than 960 businesses that employ more than 30,000 people in Lycoming County. The chamber also operates the Lycoming County Visitors Bureau and the Leadership Lycoming program.
