WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The John G. Snowden Memorial Library at Lycoming College was awarded a $34,955 grant from the Library Services and Technology Act to digitize archival materials related to women’s history from 1875 to 1925. The files that will be digitized come from Snowden Library, the Lycoming County Historical Society and the James V. Brown Library in Williamsport.

Janet Hurlbert, associate dean and director of library services at Lycoming, said making the files digital will help make the research process easier for the College community, as well as provide access to important information about Lycoming that was stored in different places.

“Not only is this a way to make our archival materials more accessible through the Web for faculty and student research projects, but it also helps preserve the archives,” Hurlbert said. “Since the history of Lycoming College is so closely tied to that of the community, often there are documents at all three institutions that fit together when researching a topic. For the first time it will be possible to easily make those connections.”

According to Hurlbert, the finished product will appear on the Web and be completed by the end of 2009.

The grant was awarded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, which receives funding for libraries and museums through the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services’ LSTA program. The national LSTA program awards grants to states that have had a “five-year plan” approved. Pennsylvania's LSTA five-year plan includes providing assistance to libraries in linking to each other or to other information resources and to increase information access.
