WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Dr. Holly Bendorf, an associate professor of chemistry at Lycoming College, has been awarded a $65,000 research grant from the American Chemical Society’s Petroleum Research Fund. Bendorf’s research project focuses on identifying and developing new reactions for the synthesis of medium-ring heterocycles. These structures are found in biologically active compounds that are potential pharmaceuticals.
The money from this grant will be used to fund a total of eight summer research students during the next four years and for the purchase of chemicals and supplies for the project.
Bendorf joined the chemistry department at Lycoming in 1995. Her research interests include organic and organometallic synthesis and she teaches classes in these subjects, as well as classes on molecular structure and spectroscopy. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University and a doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles.
The Petroleum Research Fund is an endowed fund, managed by the American Chemical Society, which supports research directly related to petroleum or alternate energy at nonprofit institutions around the world. The fund, established in 1954, also focuses on advancing scientific education and developing the careers of scientists and engineers.
