Magic comes to Lycoming College during Harry Potter night, which will be held Friday, Oct. 24, at Snowden Library starting at 9 p.m. The program is sponsored by Snowden Library, the FYRST program and the office of residential life.

Upon arrival at the event, students will draw house cards to be sorted into one of the book’s four houses.  The activities begin with the collection of bowtruckles, which are small tree-dwelling, pixie-like creatures. One hundred bowtruckles will be hidden throughout the first floor of the library for students to find and place in a house bucket. The house with the most at the end of the night will win the coveted house cup.

Wizard-themed refreshments, such as butterbeer and pumpkin pasties, will be served throughout the night.  A guest librarian, dressed as the divination professor from the books, will be running a fortune-telling booth throughout the evening as well.

Mary Broussard, assistant professor and instructional services librarian, said the program is fun because it appeals to all audiences, whether they are fans of the book series or not.

“The library is always looking for new outreach ideas. This one has been great because it is based on the books, and because it provides its own appeal,” she said. “I think it is still fun for those who haven’t read the books because they get to see their professors and staff dressed up like characters that are often very unlike their real-world identities.”

This is the third time the library has hosted this program. Broussard estimates that 100 students attended last year’s event.
