Washington Monthly ranks Lycoming College among top national liberal arts schools

9-22-09

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Washington Monthly magazine recently ranked Lycoming 143 out of more than 200 national liberal arts colleges in its annual “College Rankings” edition. Washington Monthly uses several categories to evaluate how well institutions contribute to society based on grants and graduation rate, contributions to research and student commitment to community service.

Lycoming’s overall ranking was influenced by its high graduation rate, where Lycoming was 77th among the top liberal arts colleges featured in the rankings. The College’s graduation rate of 70 percent exceeds state and national averages. Other factors that influence the ranking are the percentage of student receiving Pell Grants, as well as the difference in predicted and actual graduation rates.

Lycoming scored well in the research category, which is influenced in part by the number of students planning further education after graduation. Lycoming students have significant opportunities as undergraduates to work directly with faculty on research through their coursework, senior capstone projects and summer research internships. These unique experiences better prepare students for the nation’s top-level graduate schools and research programs.

The College also received high marks in the community service category. Forty-five percent of Lycoming’s 1,400 students participate in service programs, recording an average of 34,000 volunteer hours annually.
