WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Essayist Scott Russell Sanders will give a reading of his work on Monday, Sept. 28, at 7:30 p.m. at Lycoming College’s Shangraw Performance Hall in the Mary Lindsay Welch Honors Hall.
Sanders has published more than 20 books including novels, collections of stories and works of personal nonfiction. His newest book, “A Conservationist Manifesto,” was just released while another book, “A Private History of Awe,” was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.
Among his many accomplishments are the Lannan Literary Award, the Great Lakes Book Award and the John Burroughs Essay Award. Russell has also received support from such organizations as the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Born in Memphis, Tenn., in 1945, Sanders grew up in Ohio and went on to study physics and English at Brown University. Upon graduating in 1967, he attended graduate school at the University of Cambridge with the help of a Marshall Scholarship. Sanders earned a Ph.D. in English in 1971. That same year, he began teaching at Indiana University, where he still teaches today as a Distinguished Professor of English. Sanders and his wife, Ruth, raised two children in their hometown of Bloomington, Ind.
