Exhibit by Lycoming College art history professor to showcase Williamsport’s stained glass windows

9-2-09

Dr. Amy GolahnyWILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Dr. Amy Golahny, professor of art history and chair of the Art Department at Lycoming College, has organized the exhibition of photographs “The Stained Glass Windows of Williamsport,” which will be on view Oct. 2 to Jan. 23, 2010, at the Thomas T. Taber Museum in downtown Williamsport. An opening reception will be held at the museum Friday, Oct. 2, from 6-8 p.m. Golahny will give a PowerPoint presentation about her research for the Lycoming County Historical Society on Sunday, Oct.18, at 2 p.m. at the museum.

The exhibition features photographs of the major stained glass windows in 10 local houses of worship, all built before 1910. These include one Jewish Temple and two historically African-American churches. The exhibition presents the windows as historical, architectural and artistic artifacts.

“The windows are not only stunningly beautiful examples of the art and craft of stained glass, but they also reveal a facet of the community’s history,” said Golahny. “The styles range from angular and brilliantly colored medieval type panes to the innovative opalescent images created by Tiffany Co. The 10 houses of worship represent the community’s religious diversity.”

Many of the windows are made by renowned stained glass studios, including New York’s Tiffany Co. and Philadelphia’s D’Ascenzio Co. and Gettier Studios. The high costs of these windows reflect Williamsport’s prosperity during the lumbering era.

The results of Golahny’s research will be published as the Lycoming County Historical Society’s 2009 Annual Journal and will include color images of the windows.

The project was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
