WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College Theatre Department will present one of the great plays of the Western world, “The Antigone of Sophocles,” on Oct. 1-3, 8 and 10 in the Mary L. Welch Theatre at Lycoming College.
The play’s primary characters are larger-than-life human beings who are driven by deep zeal and conviction. Both Antigone and her uncle, King Kreon, are consumed by the power of their beliefs. Antigone’s two brothers, Eteocles and Polyneices, have just killed each other in a civil war. Kreon has become king and proclaims that Polyneices, who attacked the city to unseat his brother on the throne, is a traitor and should not be buried. Kreon, desperate to restore order, knows that laws must be obeyed in any civilized society or chaos will ensue. Despite Kreon’s decree, the young upstart Antigone buries Polyneices, defying her uncle’s law, because she believes that she must follow the will of the gods. These two strong willed personalities become locked in a bitter battle that inevitably leads to tragedy. What makes the play captivating is the fact that both of these adversaries are right. When their indomitable wills clash, tragedy is inevitable.
The play is directed by N.J. Stanley, assistant professor of theatre at Lycoming, and features an 11-member cast. Student cast members include Alyssa Allen, Amy Richards, Jonathan Estable, Elijah Perry, Eric Stishan, Cindy Pyott, Jesse Shade, John Forrester, Tom Robinson and Chase Mack. Professional guest artist Peter Aylward performs as the fiery King Kreon.
