The Washington Monthly magazine recently ranked Lycoming College 58th out of more than 200 national liberal arts colleges in its third annual “College Rankings” edition. The Washington Monthly rankings assess how well institutions contribute to society based on affordability and student access, commitment to community service, and contributions to research.

Lycoming’s overall ranking was influenced by its high graduation rate, in which Lycoming ranked 31st among the national liberal arts colleges in the Washington Monthly rankings. The College’s graduation rate of 70% exceeds the state and national averages.

“Lycoming students are taught by full-time faculty who are highly credentialed in small classes,” said Dr. James E. Douthat, President of the College. “These are all factors which we believe contribute to our solid graduation rate and student success beyond Lycoming.”

The College also received high marks in the community service category, placing 30th on the Washington Monthly list. Forty-five percent of the College’s 1,400 students participate in service programs, recording an average of 37,000 volunteer hours annually.

The third component of the Washington Monthly rankings is institutional contributions to research. While Lycoming did not receive any federal research grants during the survey period, the College still scores well because the College prepares a number of students for graduate school. Lycoming students have significant opportunities as undergraduates to work directly with faculty on research through their coursework, senior capstone projects, and summer research. These unique experiences better prepare students for their matriculation into the nation’s top-level research programs.

In other national rankings, Lycoming College was once again ranked as one of 266 national liberal arts colleges by U.S. News and World Report, as well as selected as one of Princeton Review’s “Best Northeastern Colleges” for 2008.
