WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Lycoming College is partnering with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs to offer eligible veterans classes at a greatly reduced fee. This opportunity is being made possible in conjunction with the Yellow Ribbon Program, which is part of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008.
To be eligible, veterans must have served at least 36 months of active duty after Sept. 10, 2001. Those who were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability and who served 30 continuous days after Sept. 10, 2001, also are eligible, as are dependents of veterans who qualify for a transfer of entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Veterans seeking entrance as first-year or transfer students must meet normal Lycoming admissions requirements.
“The protracted wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are fought with a military force of volunteers representing less than 1 percent of the American population,” said Dr. Susan Ross, an associate professor of sociology at Lycoming and co-author of “Deployed: How Reservists Bear the Burden of Iraq.” “The education assistance provided through the Post-9/11 GI Bill is an important way for us to acknowledge those who have borne the cost of these wars and to help veterans of these wars transition to civilian lives. I am pleased that Lycoming College is participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program and look forward to working with the veterans who come to our campus.”
Veterans who meet these criteria and who are enrolled at the college full-time also may be entitled to a monthly housing allowance and a yearly stipend to help cover the costs of books and other supplies. For more information, visit www.gibill.va.gov. Veterans may also contact Lycoming’s Office of Admissions at (570) 321-4026.
