Lycoming College Relay for Life surpasses fundraising goal

Lycoming College’s fourth annual Relay for Life event raised more than $28,500, surpassing the goal of $27,000. Donations from the event benefit the American Cancer Society.

About 32 teams consisting mostly of Lycoming students, faculty and staff participated in this year’s event, which took place March 14-15 in the College’s Recreation Center. Many campus organizations raised money for the cause. In all, between 400 and 500 people attended the event.

Colleges Against Cancer (CAC), formed on campus in 2004 by Lindsay Martin, a 2007 Lycoming graduate, sponsored the event. Martin now works for the American Cancer Society (ACS) and this was the first event she coordinated for ACS. She worked with current CAC president Kim Franco, relay chair Aaron Lay and the CAC committee to make the event a success.

Three cancer survivors, Kathy Hughes, Jeff Martin and Valerie King, participated in the relay and spoke about their cancer experiences.

Jason Thomas, a musician from State College, Pa., performed at the event. Other entertainment included Lycoming singing group Black Tie Affair and the College’s Battle of the Bands winner. There was also a luminary service, a somber event where white bags were placed around the indoor track and illuminated as the names of people who are fighting or have fought against cancer were read aloud. The event also featured games, relay races, food and fundraisers.
