Senior biology major presents research poster at national conference

JennieYudaJennie Yuda, a senior biology major and environmental science minor at Lycoming College, attended the 2008 Ocean Sciences Meeting held March 2-7, in Orlando, Fla. The week-long activities included both oral and poster sessions.

Yuda presented a poster on Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) levels and DMSP lyase activity in cultured symbiodinium isolates. The research, involving coral reef bleaching mechanisms, was taken from her summer 2007 Research Experience for Undergraduates at the University of Maryland: Chesapeake Biological Labs. She was accepted into the conference through the ASLO Multicultural Program, which offers opportunities for minority students, both undergraduate and graduate, who are interested in the various aquatic sciences.

The conference was co-sponsored by the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, American Geophysical Union, The Oceanography Society, and Estuarine Research Federation.

Yuda, a resident of Boiling Springs, Pa., and graduate of Cumberland Valley High School, also serves as chair of LEAF (Lycoming Environmental Awareness Foundation), which sponsors a yearly kayak trip on the Susquehanna River. She is completing a year long honors research project testing the nitrogen removal efficiency of a Cromaglass wastewater treatment system.
