Lycoming’s biology department celebrates April Fools’ Day

In honor of April Fools’ Day, students in the Lycoming College Biology Department decided to add decorations to the offices of the department’s professors. The individualized displays reflect the interests and quirks of each faculty member and were all done in good fun.

The decorations begin at the entrance to the Heim Science Building, with a poster featuring Snow White and the seven dwarves, with the picture of a different biology professor on each dwarf.

By circling around the first floor hallway of the building, which houses the biology department, faculty offices trimmed with personalized ornaments can be seen.

The office of Dr. Michelle Briggs, whose main research interests involve plants, was covered in green streamers and had several potted plants sitting outside. Deer tracks and droppings pointed the way toward Dr. Mel Zimmerman’s office, due to his research interest in scatology, or the study of animal feces for biological purposes. Outside of Dr. Edward Gabriel’s office, a memorial to Austrian monk and geneticist Gregor Mendel, complete with a trail of peas, was erected in observation of Gabriel’s interest in genetics. Dr. Mary Morrison’s office was guarded by mouse traps in honor of her work with the “Mouse House,” the home of the department’s rodent friends. Dr. Jeffrey Newman’s office was blockaded by a tower of coffee cans in recognition of his appreciation for a good cup of coffee. The displays were guarded by caution tape, which was hung up at the entrances to the biology floor.
