Award-winning filmmaker Zeinabu Irene Davis will give a multi-media presentation at Lycoming College, titled “To: The Secret Island, a.k.a. Haiti, From: U.S. Return to Sender Program.” Her presentation is part of the College’s spring symposium series, “Beyond Borders: Navigating Immigration within the U.S.” Scheduled for March 10 at 7 p.m. in the Barclay Lecture Hall, Heim Bldg. G-11, Davis will discuss the process and research conducted for the development of her upcoming short film, titled “The Secret Island,” which will describe the impact of immigration issues on families, specifically children.
Davis is an independent filmmaker and full professor of communication at the University of California, San Diego. Her work primarily focuses on the depiction of women of African descent. She frequently writes and lectures around the country on African and African-American cinema.
Davis earned a bachelor’s degree from Brown University, a master's degree in African studies and a master of fine arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. She has received grants and fellowships from such sources as the Rockefeller Foundation, the American Film Institute and the National Endowment for the Arts.
