FACULTY AND STAFF: Meet Barbara Buedel

B.A., University of Kentucky M.A., M. Phil. Ph.D., Yale University
Barbara Foley Buedel is Professor of Spanish and Director of International Education at Lycoming. Her teaching interests are varied, and she offers courses throughout the Spanish curriculum on language, literature, and culture. Most of her upper-level courses focus on the literature and culture of Spain although she occasionally teaches courses on Latin American literature or combines readings drawn from both Spain and Latin America. The latter reflects her plans for a new course she is developing on Hispanic theatre. Buedel's research interests are many. Trained as a medievalist, she originally studied satire in medieval and Golden Age narrative before shifting her research to more recent centuries. Her publications include studies on medieval topics, Latin American colonial poetry, interdisciplinary studies, and women writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. One of her forthcoming publications is an article on Latin American writer, Isabel Allende. Since 1997 her research has focused on contemporary Spanish theatre, and her publications (in print and forthcoming) include essays on the theatre of Carmen Resino, Yolanda Pallín, Carmen Delgado Salas, Àngels Aymar, and Pedro Víllora. Currently, her research interests include projects on contemporary theatre, film, and international education. Buedel earned her bachelor's degree in Spanish at the University of Kentucky where she was an active member of the Honors Program. As a teaching fellow at Yale University, she earned a master's degree in Spanish and a master's in Philosophy before completing the doctorate in Spanish literature. She taught at Yale and Albertus Magnus College before coming to Lycoming College in 1989.
