Information Technology Services (ITS) FAQ

  • Groupwise 7 E-mail Standard
    • Windows client installed on office and lab computers.
    • Archive! Limited to 100 MB. Inbox not recovered; Archive is on file system.
    • Web version: Mail.lycoming.edu. Backup: student.lycoming.edu. Icons on the Administration, Academic and Current Students web pages.
    • Checklists, Categories, Schedule (faculty schedule), Tasks, Discussion groups.
    • Viruses and Spyware are filtered before coming into the campus network. Still be suspicious of attachments (.exe) and links in your messages.
    • SPAM: Heuristics filter set to 5 of 10. E-mail is tagged as susptect SPAM at 3.5 > 80% of incoming mail is SPAM.


    Network / Internet
    • Cisco-based network with FireWall & Packet Shaping. Allow downloads, etc., but lower priority than e-mail and web browsing. Limit individual user bandwitdth.
    • Personal network storage starts at 60MB for employees and can be increased up to 500MB. Archive on CD/RW on local, lab, or common computer.
    • NetStorage for web-based access. See icons on the Admin/Acad web pages.
    • Web page design help for departments.


    Moodle 1.6 E-Learning Standard
    • Library eReserves and Regular classes.
    • One-on-One assistance.


    Wireless (11MB shared vs. 100MB dedicated)
    • Academic Center: Library, Pennington Lounge (including patio outside), 2nd and 3rd floor classrooms, 2nd and 3rd floor C section labs.
    • Wertz: Burchfield lounge, Jack's Corner, Jane Shultz Banquet Room.
    • Heim: 1st and 2nd floors, outside main Quad.
    • Everything else is wired.
    • Registration is with Campus Manager.


    Budget Process
    • Cycle: November for Faculty, December for Administrators, Committees Jan/Feb, Approval late April. Some lab & faculty purchases in April, bulk on July 1.
    • Letter to all directors, chairs, and faculty in November.
    • Think about software in labs for the next year. Policy is that all or at least a complete lab must be populated.
    • Plan needs including smaller devices (experimental equipment, USP devices, etc.).
    • Electronic devices, such as cell phones, etc. are blocked at the Business Office when put into supply budgets. Should be in the annual budget.


    Student Computing
    • Orientation: E-mail (50MB), Webadvisor, network space, policies.
    • 99%+ on ResNet. 13th year. Self-install. Mandatory Technology Fee.
    • Printing $.05/page after 600 pages per semester. Computers on ResNet not charged for local printing.
    • Labs: Requires login, network space automatically available, systems secured.
    • 100MB network space after logging in. Backed up nightly.
    • WebAdvisor
    • Grades seen immediately, Financial aid, Degree Audit, Room assignments, Class Schedule (no longer handed out), Freshman Orientation, etc.
    • Packetshaper: P2P, Bandwidth, and Virus violations.


    Media Services
    • Try to schedule rooms with Registrar for permanent computers/projection equipment (see Media Services for more details.
    • Lab: B201, Heim, A3, A5 (not B200)
    • B12, 202, 204, 206, 208, 209, 300, 302, 304, 306,307, C303, HEIM, G40,G9, G11, Fine Arts. Projection only in Honors Hall and Schultz Dining.
    • Media Services: 10 days to schedule Mobile Equipment.
    • Overheads, screens, and network connections in every classroom.
    • Permanent TV's from Media Services: see web site or make mobile requests.
    • Broadcast from tape or satellite on Ch.2 or Bulletin Board on Ch.80.
    • Web cams by request and streaming audio and video services.
    • Facility schedule is an online form and link under Campus Calendar.


    Desktop / Software Standards
    • Must save to F Drive, do not recover data on C Drive.
    • Archive on CD/RW after exceeding F Drive Space.
    • Network Printing: (No individual printers) Department chargeback. Paper & toner supplied from Print Shop. Networked Color printers and Poster maker in Print Shop ($1.25/sq ft.)
    • Windows XP/Office 2003 in all labs and classroom computers, students on ResNet.
    • Virus and Spyware Protection: TrendMicro on all employee computers, labs, and servers. Students supply their own.
    • Windows XP updates pushed out from central servers to office desktops.
    • Microsoft Word for all attachments and publications. No Works or WordPerfect.
    • FrontPage 2003 for Department pages. Pages must abide by Lycoming web page design standards. Redesign now incorporating content management and DreamWeaver.
    • Internet Explorer 6 for WebAdvisor and web mail on PC. Current Firefox for Mac. No other browsers supported.
    • GroupWise for reading campus mail at userid@lycoming.edu. Not supporting Third-party e-mail clients using POP. Passive support for IMAP4.
    • Moodle is the standard for e-Learning.
    • SPSS 14.0 statistics is the standard.
    • Lab software must be purchased for every machine in one lab.Call ITS.
    • Microsoft site license: Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, Picture Manager.


    Telephone
    • Personal calls with TAC code.
    • Voice Mail access from on and off campus.
    • Avoid calling student cell phones to prevent excessive off-campus local and long distance calls. Students have dial tone and voice mail with Technology Fee.
    • Switchboard Operators in Long Hall are also ITS staff. Issues to Brigitte.
    • VOIP Project: New phone technology over next 2 years.


    Teaching Facilities
    • Labs: 4 Windows XP, 1 Mixed Graphics Lab with Macintosh OSX. All have CD Burners and can save to network storage. B200/B201 accept "thumb drives." No floppy drives starting next year.
    • Proxy Server for Library Database off campus.
    • Minimum of 30 days to get new software loaded in labs.
    • Call Steve Caravaggio in Computer Center to schedule labs for classes. Schedule posted in Academic Computing section of web site.


    Personal Buys
    • Dell Laptop Initiative: see Bookstore web site.
    • AICUP: Microsoft purchases for employees and students.
    • Verizon 12% cell phone discount plan for personal use in 570 are code.


    Administrative Computing
    • User Interface - Windows client link into Administrative Data.
    • WebAdvisor - Web link into Administrative Data.
    • Submitting grades, Degree Audit, Rosters, Payroll Timesheet Entry.
    • Student Locator, Personnel Info, Purchase Order, Work Order Requests.
    • Budget officers look at Budget Office rules under Treasurer's Office.
