Hello. My name is Karl Haviland and I'm a senior from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania majoring in computer science.
If I could describe my experience at Lycoming in one word, I would say "opportunity." Since my freshman year, I have been presented with opportunities to try many different things. I was a member of the soccer team, wrote articles for the student newspaper, sang in the Lycoming Tour Choir (in Spain and throughout the US), and served as Vice President of my fraternity. During this time I even held down two part-time jobs.
I've also had a great educational experience here at Lycoming. In addition to gaining a good theoretical base, I was able to hone my skills in programming, networking, and computer security. These skills helped me land an internship with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. As part of my internship, I developed a computer security awareness training program and wrote several security policies. The job was challenging and fun. Best of all it showed me the value of a computer science degree in the real world, especially in the area of computer security.
When I finish my studies at Lyco I plan to pursue a position as an Information Systems Security Officer and eventually go on to attain my masters. If anyone reading this is looking for an ISSO, let me know.
Good luck in your college search!
