The Business of Communication

Major: Corporate Communication
Minor: Corporate Communication

The world has never been more interconnected, and we have never had access to as much information as we do today. According to Nielsen's most recent audience report, Americans spend over 11 hours each day listening to, watching, reading, or interacting with media. As new trends and platforms emerge, it is more important than ever for students to immerse themselves in the study of communication.

The major is perfect for anyone interested in social media, digital communication, public relations, advertising, broadcasting, and related fields. Courses take a holistic approach by examining the latest developments in the business, nonprofit, news, government, sports, and entertainment industries. Students prepare to think analytically and creatively while gaining the leadership skills necessary to succeed in today’s multifaceted and ever-evolving society.

The communication field proposes another distinct advantage: security. The U.S. Department of Labor Statistics reports that the demand for media and communication professionals is increasing steadily, with a median salary of $59,230 in 2019, significantly higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $39,810.

A major in communication with a liberal arts base prepares students for the full array of media-related professions with a curriculum that supports a balance of practice and theory. Communication students at Lycoming College study the way media interacts with society, and are introduced to a variety of media in their courses, as well as outside of the classroom through independent projects, internships, and more.
