GREETINGS
I am Kelly Howerter, a senior chemistry major with a minor in criminal justice. My ultimate goal after Lycoming is to start a career in the forensic science field, possibly doing investigative analysis or laboratory research. Thanks to Lycoming, I have been able to gain knowledge of many perspectives within the chemistry field through research in the laboratory and the classroom experience.
One of the greatest opportunities within the chemistry department is the chance to complete a summer research internship or independent study with one of four chemistry professors. The summer before my junior year, I had the privilege of working with Dr. Chriss McDonald in his organic chemistry lab. This internship not only gave me exceptional hands-on experience with the instruments and chemical methods, but it also made me realize that the science field is my true passion. The summer before my senior year I had quite the unique experience, again working in a laboratory. This time, I was part of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Summer Honors Internship Program and worked in the FBI Forensics Laboratory in Quantico, VA. I was introduced to perhaps the most well-known law enforcement agency, while gaining knowledge and experience in the forensics field.
Other great components of the Lycoming chemistry department include the friendly, outgoing personalities of the professors and the Chemistry Club which sponsors activities such as bowling night, a Christmas ChemisTree Party, and a Mole Day Celebration. Qualifying juniors and seniors can also be inducted into Gamma Sigma Epsilon, the National Chemistry Honor Society, which recognizes outstanding students in the chemistry field. These are just a few of the highlights surrounding Lyco Chem. The opportunities within this department are endless and it has been a wonderful experience being a part of it for the past three years!
