COURSES
The biology department offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. The department also offers a comprehensive Environmental Science minor and cooperative programs in Forestry and Environmental Studies through Duke University.
All biology majors take a core set of courses which includes the 2 semester introductory course, Genetics, Ecology, Plant Sciences, Microbiology, and Human Physiology.
Students intending to continue on to graduate school or on to industry tend to pursue the Bachelor of Science degree while students interested in teaching usually opt for the Bachelor of Arts degree. Basically, the B.S. degree requires several higher level biology courses and additional courses in chemistry, math, and physics. The B.A. degree offers more flexibility by requiring one higher level course in biology and additional courses in chemistry and physics. Future teachers need this flexibility in order to fit in their education certification courses and still graduate in a normal four year sequence.
