Dr. McGarvey came to Lycoming's Biology department from the teaching staff of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. A graduate of Hofstra Univeristy, he has a master's degree in Bioeducation from the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University and a doctorate in Cell Biology, Neuroscience, and Anatomy, from Loyola University in Chicago. He also held a post-doctoral fellowship at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He has had 21 research articles published. Dr. Mc Garvey's research interests include transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, which is the fifth most common cancer in the United States. While at the University of Pennsylvania, he and his collaborators identified a novel gene transcript designated transitional epithelial response gene (renamed as Ubiad1), which seems to have a role in the progression of bladder cancer, and blood vessel development in the embryo. In addition, ubiad1 has been found to be mutated in a rare eye disorder called Schnyder crystalline corneal dystrophy. One of Dr. McGarvey's professional goals is to involve Lycoming students in his research of bladder cancer development and progression.
