Chasety Starr The work being shown is a reflection of how I interpret our human effects upon nature, animals, and thus ourselves. The goal of these pieces was to show the viewer there is much more to the ways we live our life than meets the eye. Rather than allowing them to question where society and humanity may be heading, I give them a look at one direction and question them on how they feel about it. Underneath each ordinary sight are hidden layers to the world in which is overlooked. I show the viewer the layers of the world that I see, through the layers of the materials within the work. The pieces give the viewer the emotion alone, and the materials and structure helps guide them into the question of why they feel that way. In my sculptures I used a variety of materials to fully incorporate the various feelings of the subject matter. The feeling I was working to incorporate was that of an uncomfortable moment upon first glance. For one second after initial glance, the piece appears naturalistic in form, yet the fact remains that none of the pieces are actually recognizable. Upon further examination it gives the viewer a sense of uneasiness. There are many textured layers to complicate the interpretation, allowing for a range of emotions. All the materials are naturally derived, yet used by man, and changed by them. The cloth allows for a soft feel contracting the harshness of the metal. The form curved and bend, flowing in some areas, yet remain sharp and unfinished in others. I have allowed for seams and cuts to form in the desired shapes, while maintaining a harsh unfinished feel. This is to give the sense that work is in a continual process of changing. Going along with the theme, the work gives has a homemade feel, because I is. It is manmade and handmade, just as our effects upon each other are. |
