World Renowned Archaeologists Joining Lycoming College

World renowned archaeologists Dr. William G. Dever and Dr. Pamela Gaber will join the faculty at Lycoming College in the fall of 2008. Dever, one of the world’s leading biblical archaeologists, noted, “For a small college to have so many students majoring in archaeology is unprecedented. To find students who are interested in the discipline and a faculty and administration that are supportive, augurs very well. It was really refreshing to see what a small college with a sense of community, of commitment, and of values was like.”

“I have been running field schools for 20 years, and the students who have come to me from Lycoming have been noticeably stronger than the students from many other colleges,” said Gaber. “So right away I was attracted to this opportunity at Lycoming and knew that this would be a fruitful collaboration..." Professor of Art Screens Iraq War Documentary

Lynn Estomin, Associate Professor of Art at Lycoming College, presented her documentary, Heroes, at the Campus Theatre in Lewisburg at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 4. The screening was part of the collaborative multimedia event “Heroes and Hungry Ghosts,” and featured live performances by acclaimed musician Ritsu Katsumata.

Heroes (2006) looks at the war in Iraq through the eyes of two Americans: Celeste Zappala, whose son, Sgt. Sherwood Baker, was killed in an explosion in Baghdad and Patrick Resta, Specialist/E4, who served as an Army medic in Iraq. Heroes blends interviews about the war and the personal experiences of members of the National Guard in Iraq with striking images by twelve independent photographers and Katsumata's haunting musical score to tell a story often ignored by the mainstream media. The film has been shown at film festivals in Ohio, California, New York, Chicago, Canada, and in Mumbai, India. The documentary was also broadcast nationally on Free Speech TV.
