WELCOME TO THE ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT

Lycoming’s accounting department enjoys a longstanding tradition of excellence in teaching and successful placement of graduates. Being an accountant is more than simply being “good” with numbers. Accountants also need strong problem-solving abilities, analytical skills, writing skills and interpersonal know-how. With an average class size of 16 students and with faculty who have extensive and current real-world experience, Lycoming students are ensured that they will develop these necessary abilities.

Financial or Managerial Accounting? Lycoming is just one of a few schools that offer preparation for both financial and managerial accounting. The two-track program prepares students for entry-level positions in public, private, industrial, governmental, and non-profit organizations. Specifically, the Financial Accounting
Track prepares students for careers in public accounting and
provides preparation for the Certified Public Accountant
Examination (CPA). The Managerial Accounting Track
prepares students for financial careers in business,
often leading to positions such as controller or
chief financial officer. Students in this track are prepared
for the Certified Management Accountant Examination.

Lycoming offers both a 150 and 128 credit
hour accounting program. The 150 hour program
is fast becoming the industry standard for becoming
a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). In fact,
most states require this type of program before
one can take the CPA series of examinations
(this is not yet a Pennsylvania requirement).
At most colleges this will take five years to complete,
but with Lycoming’s flexible curriculum and your
proper course selection, students can finish their
program in four years if they take advantage of
May and summer term courses or nine semesters
(4½ years). The 128 hour accounting degree
for those students who do not necessarily plan to
work in auditing or public accounting.
